Tuan Nguyen: The actual question is which one helps us at this table, not which one looks better.
Yumi Nakamura: Workbook aside, I'd rather start with the phrase card.
Tuan Nguyen: Let's compare them line by line: you read one line, and I answer without looking.
Tuan Nguyen: I wouldn't call the workbook useless; it's just slower for speaking.
Yumi Nakamura: Okay, I'll try this line: 'Should we move to the window or stay here?'
Tuan Nguyen: One point about how we take turns: let's signal clearly before switching.
Yumi Nakamura: Then we stay at this table and keep going with the card.

During a pair task in Language class, Yumi and I were told to build a short dialogue from a phrase card. The instruction sounded simple, but the actual goal was not clear.

Yumi thought we had to memorize the card and perform it exactly, while I believed we should create a new conversation using it as a springboard. We almost argued over a detail that seemed trivial.

Instead of guessing, I raised my hand and asked the teacher to clarify the expected outcome. I did not want to prejudge Yumi's interpretation, but the original instruction still felt insufficient.

Once the teacher explained the goal, we set aside the unclear version and restarted the task with the same phrase card. Technically, we could have used the workbook first, but the card made us speak.

Looking back, I learned that the misunderstanding was not a waste of time. Asking for clarification made our work stronger, and I will not underestimate a short instruction again.
